| Abstract: | Medical History Abstract: Patient, male, 32 years old, presented to our expert outpatient clinic on October 15, 2023, due to “progressive right-leg gait after more than a year of taking antipsychotic medication.” The patient had previously visited numerous large hospitals in Guangxi and other provinces, but there had been no improvement. Examination of the muscles and nervous system at a prominent Beijing comprehensive hospital revealed no abnormalities. The patient returned to our expert outpatient clinic on March 17, 2025. Symptoms and findings: Conscious and oriented, normal contact, no signs of mental symptoms. No significant abnormalities in the nervous system. Muscles below the knee in the right leg were stiff, with increased muscle tone, preventing straightening. This resulted in a gait resembling a stride-and-pause pattern. Diagnosis: The patient developed movement disorders six months after starting antipsychotic medication (risperidone). A comprehensive examination at a Beijing hospital ruled out muscle and nervous system disorders. The diagnosis was consistent with tardive dyskinesia, characterized by the onset of movement disorders six months or more after initiating antipsychotic treatment. Treatment Plan: Based on the patient’s medical history and diagnosis, the most effective treatment for tardive dyskinesia currently available is deutetrabenazine tablets. Starting with a low dose and gradually increasing the dosage over time was recommended, taking into account the patient’s medication regimen and overall health. Clinical Outcome: After four weeks of treatment, the patient’s muscle tone in the right leg returned to normal, and he was able to walk normally again. Follow-up one month later showed that the condition remained stable. The patient continues to receive treatment. |
